In fact, for the most part, Erlich as a character felt irrelevant here - and not in the usual, "Haha, he shouldn't be at this meeting" sort of way, although T.J. Most of Erlich and Big Head's business venture had a few funny moments, but it didn't add much to the overarching story. Granted, there were a few so-so B stories that weren't quite as interesting. That's not to mention Gavin's multiple "zoological comparisons" and the untimely death of an elephant. For instance, the online push and pull between Hooli and Pied Piper culminated in Gilfoyle's hilarious "god view" feature, which got Gavin and his Nucleus-but-not-Nucleus minions to pull the plug on their entire system.
Meanwhile, Gavin Belson's attempts at course correction after the Nucleus fallout yielded their own funny scenes.
Indeed, these first five episodes or so had a lot going for then, and they effectively setup the dominos to fall in the second half. This included several entertaining side bars like the new Pied Piper offices, Jack's infamous "Box," and Richard's failed skunkworks operation. Stephen Tobolowsky's Jack Barker got this season off to a rousing start, as he and Richard vied for the leadership role within the company. Honestly, it's kind of amazing how long this show has been able to keep the guys from becoming successful, but it's still been enjoyable to watch as they stumble and soar through this very niche industry. The same can be said for the new season, Season 3, which took Pied Piper on yet another rollercoaster ride of highs and lows. Silicon Valley is one of those shows I tend not to think about in it's off-time, but whenever it's back I always enjoy it.
